Every living thing has a unique code written in DNA that has been evolving for billions of years. This DNA code is inherited by the offspring of an organism and it what mixes when we have babies. Since the discovery of DNA as the hereditary molecule and its beautiful structure(L) Scientists have been slowly gaining understanding and power over DNA and life itself.

In the 1980s Kary Mullis developed a way to amplify a few copies of any specific piece of DNA into millions of copies, in a method still used in every molecular biology laboratory around the world-PCR. This has transformed Molecular Biology, but PCR requires expensive equipment to rapidly and precisely change temperatures and checking the results of a PCR is not very simple.

This is why we use Loop mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP). A related recent DNA amplification technique. LAMP is very specific and rapid, and allows amplification at a constant temperature, greatly simplifying the process and reducing cost. Specifically we use a new improvement called Quasr LAMP which utilizes fluorescent Primers, and Quenchers, which solves problems of false positives, allows multiplexing and easy detection of results with fluorescence.

A genetically modified organism (GMO) is any organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques (i.e., a genetically engineered organism). The first genetically modified bacteria was created in 1973, and the first plant was produced in 1983. Today GMOs are widely used, all human insulin for diabetics is produced by genetically modified bacteria, and adoption of herbicide and insecticide resistant crops has been widely adopted. New cancer immunotherapies utilize genetic modification where your own immune cells are taken out of the body and modified to detect and attack cancer cells, and then returned to the body. Until recently making a genetically modified organism with new traits was very difficult and costly, but with new technologies such as CRISPR/CAS this is rapidly becoming much easier.

We are bringing all this together to allow anybody anywhere to detect GMOs in their food. We believe people should have the right to know what they are eating. We also believe that a deeper public understanding is urgently needed to have a more informed debate on when and how to use these amazing new powers.
